About Hypnosis

Hypnosis in a one-to-one setting is very unlike the showmanship or stage hypnosis style you often see in the media where the hypnotist seems to have some incredible power over people, making members of the audience behave in ways they probably would prefer not to.

Hypnosis in a therapeutic setting is a technique, that when used by a trained therapist can allow clients to access their own inner resources, through helping them bypass the conscious, analytical part of the mind. This does not mean that clients become unconscious or unaware, they are control at all times. A person can’t be hypnotised against his/her wishes. Through helping clients enter a deeply relaxed hypnotic state it is possible to access this other level of the mind - the part of the mind that influences behaviour, emotions and feelings.

This hypnotic state can then be used therapeutically, to help bring about positive change using these inner resources. Almost everyone who wishes to undergo hypnosis can achieve a level of relaxation for therapy to take place. Most clients are pleasantly surprised at how relaxing they find the whole experience.

In terms of ‘hypnotherapy’, this is the clinical application of hypnosis. Many people train in ‘hypnosis’, however very few people are adequately trained in the psychotherapeutic aspect.
